Urban Scale Journey / Living City

The resulting urban density and intimacy of points of interest varies with change of scale and generate multi-layers of interactive journeys.

Urban planning is a design responsive act to statutory implementation of Government policies to set boundaries and guidelines of macro development in cities or districts.  We, designers play a role of connecting people in shaping the human living habitat.  In response to request for urban planning design consultation for the new heart of China’s famous Olympic Yacht Racing coastal city, Qingdao, we target to merge the historical port area, Qingdao Dagang to the beautiful coastline that cited the new Qingdao Cruise Terminal and connect to the old city area embedded with German architectural heritage .  Traditional phenomenon is to build an environment with functions and space for people to use as designated.   Layers of hardware and defined functions are planned for targeted users and activities.  Collaborated with local government and developer, our study redefines the urban grid, embracing historical, cultural, functional, economical aspects to give a vibrant and interactive living environment.  From macro to specific micro study of spatial design in urban planning scale, key functions are effectively zoned in alignment with layers of the three-dimensional organic urban grid.  Specific functions are interweaved to ensure effective allocation of resources in place making and connectivity.  The resulting urban density and intimacy of points of interest varies with change of scale and generate multi-layers of interactive journeys.  Purpose and time frame of each journey by different individual shape paths that connect destinations across zones and spark reactions.  In time, human reactions intervene and in return space evolve to response.  Each such individual journey and behavior energize the city to grow into an environment that we would like to live in.  We believe in design with flexibility to nurture the healthy natural growth of our city.
